This antique confit pot with its rustic patina dates back to the late 1700s and originates from Puglia. It was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. What makes this confit pot unique is the internal glaze - here featured in an olive green hue (they were typically glazed in a creamy white), whilst the external terracotta is left raw and on display. The anchovy pot was most likely left unglazed externally due to economic factors - as glazing an entire vessel was expensive, particularly for the largely rural folk of the time. The two-handle pot features a charmingly rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today the ‘vasettu’ would make the perfect vase for fresh flowers, storage vessel or decorative display piece injecting some Mediterranean farmhouse charm to any home or space, particularly when pared with the matching ceramic pots from southern Italy, as seen in the images.

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen. To utilise as vases, it is recommended to use a separate internal water vase or vials for live stems.
