Timeless Authentic Pieces Handpicked in Southern Italy

This antique confit pot with its iridescent pistachio green glaze and two handles dates back to the mid 1800s. The hand thrown vessel originates from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia known for its age old ceramic craft. This type of confit pot was originally used for preserving foods such as olives, artichokes or anchovies, usually in olive oil. It did not have a lid, instead a cloth would be tied around the rim to keep insects and flies out of the precious contents. The wonderfully rustic pot features a deep green glaze around the top, with drips on one side, that gives way to the raw clay at its base. This half glaze was applied for hygiene purposes to be wiped clean after use, rather than simply decorative - glazing was an expensive technique, so it was more economical to partially glaze a vessel. This rustic example of domestic pottery features a charming surface patina brought about by years of daily use and the passing of time. Today this farmhouse confit pot would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or simply decorative, adding some country charm to any home or space.

This antique extra large confit pot with handles has a minimal and spontaneous hand painted motif adorning the front and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. Dating back to the early 1800s, it was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil. The hand painted abstract tree of life motif in deep green, signifies good fortune and longevity, designed with the hopes of a bountiful harvest bringing prosperity to the rural folk at the time. The vasetto features that magically rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today, this charming pot would make an ideal vase for fresh or dried flowers or simply as a decorative display piece. Add impact with the matching ceramic tree of life vessels as seen in the images.
