Timeless Authentic Pieces Handpicked in Southern Italy

An antique vessel with two handles that dates back to the early 1900s. Originating from Grottaglie in southern Puglia, and called ‘pitale’ in local dialect, it was used primarily for storing olive oil. The contents could be easily extracted with a ladle due to its wider opening and no ‘neck’. This rustic pot did not have a lid, instead a ceramic plate of the same diameter was commonly placed on top. During the winter months the large handmade pot was often used for conserving dried figs. The outer main body of the farmhouse vessel was usually left unglazed or partially glazed, whilst it was glazed internally for storing the liquid or food contents. This charming piece of local history features a sunflower yellow glaze around the top half with drips on the side that give the pot its immense character. The half glaze was applied for hygiene purposes to be wiped clean after use, rather than decorative. It has an organic surface which has eroded beautifully over time and that magic patina that only years of daily use and the passing of time can bring about authentically. Today this handcrafted vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative piece adding some Mediterranean charm to any home.

A large antique pot with a vivacious mustard yellow glaze typical of ceramics from the southern Italian region of Puglia. This vasetto or ‘capuana’ as it is called in local dialect, was made in the early 1900s and was originally used for transporting water, wine and other liquids. Similar to the local amphora (used to hold wine) its shape differentiates slightly and it does not feature a ‘tap’ at the bottom to empty its contents. The charming pot with its elegant form, has a distinctive yellow half glaze that gives way to the raw clay at the bottom, as well as two handles for easy maneuvering. This type of domestic pottery was typically only partially glazed (at the rim or top half) for hygiene purposes, as it was expensive to glaze the entire vessel. The hand thrown pot features that magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use. Today, the antique vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or as a decorative piece adding some Mediterranean charm to any space, indoors or out.
