Antique Tree of Life Confit Pot

€160.00
Sold

This antique confit pot has a minimal and spontaneous hand painted motif adorning the front and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. The abstract tree of life motif signifies good fortune and longevity, designed with the hopes of a bountiful harvest bringing prosperity to the rural folk. This pot is particularly rare due to its pastel green colour set against the buttermilk glaze base. Originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil, it would have been in use up until the 1950s/60s after which industrialised processes and mass-production overtook these more traditional methods of pottery making in southern Italy. Today, this charming piece would make an ideal vase, storage vessel or simply as a decorative display piece.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H23cm x W20cm x D17cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
