Antique Anchovy Pot with Drip Glaze

€120.00
Sold

This antique anchovy pot dating back to the late 1800s was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. Commonly associated with the Grottaglie region of Puglia, (known for its age old ceramic craft) it represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’. With its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. What sets this piece apart is the mustard glaze on the side of the pot - most likely a ‘mistake’ during the firing process. The robust handmade pot with its rustic quality and aged patina from years of domestic use, gives this piece its charming individuality. The ‘vasettu’ would make an ideal vase, storage or as a decorative display piece injecting some country charm to any home or space.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H18cm x W24cm x D16cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
