Antique Ceremonial Vase with Decorative Bird

€390.00
Sold

This antique and rare hand-thrown vase is connected to the Madonna del Pozzo (‘Holy Mary of the Well’) religious festival celebrated in Capurso, Puglia. The important vessel was filled with the holy water drawn from the sacred well of the sanctuary, which according to popular belief has miraculous properties. The ceremonial vase with its two handles is made all the more unique thanks to its mesmerising lime green glaze, fluted spout and a charming decorative little bird inside the mouth. Dating back to the mid 1800s, the terracotta vase has a beautiful form, detailing and iridescent glaze that set it apart from other vases intended for everyday, domestic use of the region. Today, this vase would be ideal as a decorative display piece, injecting colour into any home or space.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H26cm x W22cm x D15cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
