Antique Créme Confit Pot with Mustard Spot
This antique confit pot dates back to the early 1900s and originates from the town of Grottaglie in southern Puglia, known for its age old ceramic craft. It was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. This type of pottery, known as ‘robba bianca’, represents the finest and most expensive kind of domestic ‘ceramica rustica’ as it was produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. The two-handle pot features a rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. The mustard spot on one side is where the vessel would have made contact with the yellow glaze of other pots in the kiln during the firing process, giving it its unique character. Today the ‘vasettu’ would make the perfect vase, storage vessel or decorative display piece injecting some country charm to any home or space, particularly when pared with the matching ceramic pots as seen in the images.
