This antique hand thrown, cylindrical shaped vessel from Puglia is typical of confit pots in southern Italy called ‘capasa’. The rustic pot dating back to the late 1800s, is internally glazed and was originally used to preserve food like ricotta, olives in brine or dried figs. The partial dark green glaze around the top edge was added for hygienic (and economical) purposes rather than decorative, so it could be wiped clean easily after use. It was also a less expensive technique used rather than glazing the entire vessel. There are indents on the external upper edge where a cloth would have been tied with a rope to cover the precious contents. The charming pot has that magic patina that can only be brought about authentically by daily use and the passing of time. Today, the large vessel with its accent of green would make an ideal vase or simply as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or outdoor space. Add impact with the matching Pugliese pottery as seen in the images.
