Antique 'Fangotto' Plate with Fish
An antique hand painted plate with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from southern Italy. This hand thrown plate hails from Caltagirone, a renowned centre of ceramic production dating back to the Magna Graecia period (from the 8th century BC). This large platter in particular dates back to the late 1800s and is called a Fangotto - a typical round plate with a raised edge that was traditionally used to dry tomatoes in the sun. It was also often used by husband and wife to share a meal from the same plate. This fangotto features a hand painted fish at centre stage in cobalt blue, with a wave pattern in green representing the sea that frames the border of the plate. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a rustic patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The antique plate is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting.
