Antique Green Glaze 'Pignate' Pot
The epitome of ‘ceramica rustica’, this antique one handled pot with its spherical body was typical of what was used in the whole of southern Italy for cooking legumes. Dating back to the early 1900s, these terracotta cooking pots are called ‘pignate’ and the x5 historic examples (as seen in the photos) are particularly unique because of their glaze and hand painted decorations adorning the upper parts. This pignate pot is particularly graphic with the decorative remnants of a forest green and mustard glaze around the top edge, set against a smoky white body and terracotta base. Today it would make a striking decorative display piece, and is a rare find especially when pared with the x4 matching pots, as seen in the photos.
