A particularly rare amphora with a hand painted tree of life decoration adorning the front in verdant green. Originating from the southern Italian region of Calabria, these motifs of vegetation were often abstract and used on ceramics of all kinds. They were hand painted primarily to bring good fortune and longevity to a largely rural folk of the time, in the hopes of a bountiful harvest. This wonderful example dates back to the early 1800s and would have been utilised for holding wine. Its smaller, portable size indicating it would have been used by farmers to refresh them whilst toiling the land. The antique amphora features that magical patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today, the rustic vessel would be the perfect piece to add some farmhouse charm to any space, especially when pared with the matching tree of life Calabrese pottery as seen in the images.
