Antique Green Tree of Life Confit Pot

€185.00

This antique confit pot has a minimal and spontaneous hand painted motif adorning the front and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. Dating back to the mid 1800s, it was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil. The confit pot would have been in use up until the 1950s/60s after which industrialised processes and mass-production overtook these more traditional methods of pottery making in southern Italy. The hand painted abstract tree of life motif signifies good fortune and longevity, designed with the hopes of a bountiful harvest bringing prosperity to the rural folk. This confit pot is particularly rare due to its one-of-a-kind design in a pistachio green colour set against the glossy buttermilk glaze base. Today, this charming piece would make an ideal vase, storage vessel or simply as a decorative display piece, especially when pared with the matching confit pots as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H23cm x W20cm x D18cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen. To utilise as vases, it is recommended to use a separate internal water vase or vials for live stems.
