Sold

A very rare apothecary jug with a unique form and hand painted bird design. This antique piece dating back to the mid 1800s was originally used to store medicinal preparations and concoctions. Its rotund shape and elegant form and serpent-like handle, are characteristic of pottery from the central Italian region of Umbria, and most likely associated with Deruta ceramic ware. Maiolica from Deruta, an Umbrian hilltop town, dates back to the Middle Ages where its beautifully decorated pottery was crafted and hand painted by some of the most skilled artisans of Italy. The antique vessel features a hand painted bird face motif in ochre brown set against the buttermilk-hued base. What makes this hand thrown piece extra special is the matching hand painted jug, as seen in the images, ideal to create an impactful decorative display.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H14cm x W18cm x D14cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
