Antique Hand Painted Blue Flower Plate 2
An antique hand painted plate with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from southern Italy, more specifically associated with the ‘sponge-ware’ ceramics of Caltagirone, Sicily. This medium sized plate dates back to the late 1800s and features a hand painted floral motif at centre stage in blue, circular rings in ochre brown and a decorative sponge-effect design in pistachio green. This green design which commonly decorated the outer edge of plates and bowls, was often created using a potato skin dabbed onto the ceramic piece to achieve this sponge-like effect. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a robust quality synonymous with domestic pottery of the region, with its rustic patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use.
