Antique Hand Painted Sicilian Jug

€240.00

A vivaciously hand painted jug from Sicily with an abstract all-over design. This antique piece dating back to the late 1800s was originally used for wine or water and would have taken pride of place in a family home. The hand crafted elegant form, pinched spout and stylised double handle, are characteristic of pottery from Caltagirone, a Sicilian town renowned for its age old ceramic craft and tradition. The unique hand painted design and punchy colours make this piece a rare find - sponge effect hues of pastel green, yellow and pink are contrasted with linear blues and blacks, creating a ‘contemporary’ effect resembling modern abstract art. Today, this antique vessel would make a lovely decorative display piece, especially when teamed with the matching ceramics from southern Italy as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H17cm x W17cm x D14cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
