Sold

A rare mid-19th-century hand-painted majolica jug from Grottaglie, Puglia, traditionally used as a wine pitcher. This charming antique ceramic features a delicate floral and leaf motif in sky blue, olive green and mustard yellow, framed by a distinctive lobed rim.

Hand thrown and finished with a creamy white glaze, the jug has an elegantly bulbous form and a characteristic pinched pouring spout. Its softly irregular shape and naturally aged patina reflect the handmade character and everyday use of traditional Southern Italian farmhouse pottery.

At 21 cm high, this is a beautifully proportioned decorative vessel for a kitchen, shelf, console or dining table. It can also be displayed with fresh flowers using a separate watertight inner vessel or glass vials.

A matching larger Grottaglie floral jug is shown in the photographs, making the two pieces particularly attractive when displayed together.
