A rare late-18th-century antique Italian ceramic bowl from Grottaglie, Puglia, one of Southern Italy's historic centres of ceramic production. Hand thrown and hand painted, this beautifully rustic bowl features a distinctive pastel-turquoise star motif surrounded by soft blue circular designs.
The circular decoration may represent the traditional malocchio or protective eye motif, historically used in Italian folk traditions to ward off the evil eye. Set against a soft ivory glaze, the bowl is left unglazed on the exterior, revealing the warm natural terracotta beneath.
Originally made for family mealtimes, this substantial 26 cm bowl has developed a wonderfully authentic patina through generations of use and the passage of time.
