Antique Hand Painted Star Bowl

€230.00

This antique hand painted bowl with its unique design originates from Grottaglie, a renowned centre of ceramic production in Puglia dating back to the Magna Graecia period (8th century). This hand-thrown bowl in particular dates back to the late 1700s and was most likely used to serve a family at mealtimes. It features a beautifully hand painted star motif in a pastel turquoise hue, as well as circular designs in soft blue possibly representing the eye motif traditionally added to ward off the ‘malocchio’ (a malevolent glare). Set against the soft ivory glaze, it is unglazed externally where the clay is left raw. The charming farmhouse-style piece has a magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The one-of-a -kind bowl is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, making an ideal centrepiece for fruit. Add impact with the matching plates and bowls from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
