Antique 'Oliera' with Hand Painted Rooster

€390.00

A beautifully formed hand thrown ‘oliera’ (a bottle for olive oil with a spout) that dates back to the early 1800s. Originating from Grottaglie in southern Puglia, and also known as ‘srulu pi l’uegghju’ in local dialect, it was used to drizzle olive oil at meal times. What makes this antique oliera a rare find is the charmingly hand painted rooster and leaf motif that decorates the top half of the vessel - most likely representing nature and a bountiful harvest. The colour combination of pastel blue and mustard yellow with accents of dark mauve, ochre brown, and jade green, set against the milky white glaze, give it a fresh ‘modern’ aesthetic. This ceramic oliera has that magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use. The antique jug is the ideal piece to inject some farmhouse charm to any kitchen or table setting, especially when pared with the matching ceramics as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H25cm x W16.5cm x D16.5cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
