Antique Hand Painted 'Righe e Stelle' Jug

€180.00
Sold

An antique hand-thrown jug with the hand painted floral motif that is a symbol of the Puglia region, known as ‘righe e stelle’. The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. Wine and water jugs from Puglia usually have the most extensive decorations and this one dates back to the mid 1800s. The charming piece with its well-loved patina and pinched spout features a floral motif in pastel blue across the body, and mustard and ochre lines across the rim. Today, this wonderful jug would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or space.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as ‘la città bianca’ (or white city).

Dimensions: H20cm x W14cm x D12cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
