A large antique 4-handle vase originating from northern Puglia and dating back to the mid-1800s. The farmhouse pot was originally used for transporting liquids (also watering a garden) with its thick robust clay keeping the contents cool. The hand-thrown vessel is unglazed both externally and internally with the 4 handles added so that the contents could be transported or moved with ease. Despite its very utilitarian purpose, the vasetto features elegant proportions with its unique decorative handles showing the maker’s thumb prints at their base and linear and scalloped sgraffito detailing around the top half. What makes this vase extra special is the magically rustic patina brought about authentically by daily use and the passing of time. The charming pot is a unique historic example of domestic southern Italian pottery, and would make a perfect centre piece in any home.
Found in Martina Franca
a charming hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known for its baroque architecture.
Dimensions: H36cm x W29cm x D29cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen. To utilise as vases, it is recommended to use a separate internal water vase or vials for live stems.
