Antique Rustic Cooking Pot

€120.00

The epitome of ‘ceramica rustica’, this antique pot with its robust spherical body and unique handles was typical of what was used in Puglia and southern Italy for cooking legumes. Dating back to the early 1900s, these cooking pots called ‘pignata’ in local dialect are traditionally made using a red clay that is resistant to heat. The handmade pots would be placed directly on the flame to cook for hours, then removed with the 2 (or sometimes 3) handles to mix contents and control the heat. Glazed internally and around the top edges, pignate pots were left unglazed on the lower half, where they would be in direct contact with the flame. This charming cooking pot has immense character that only the passing of time and years of daily use can bring about authentically. The rustic vessel would be ideal as a decorative display piece, especially when pared with the matching pignate pots as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce
