This antique confit pot dates back to the early 1800s and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. It was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. What sets this confit pot a part from others is its rich creamy glaze that gives way to the raw clay at its base, and its elegant handle design. The charming anchovy pot features that rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today the ‘vasettu’ would make the perfect vase for fresh flowers, storage vessel or decorative display piece injecting some Mediterranean farmhouse charm to any home or space, particularly when pared with the matching rustic pottery from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
