This hand-thrown antique jug dates back to the mid 1800s from the southern Italian region of Puglia. Used for holding wine at meal times it features the pinched spout typical of ceramic pitchers from southern Italy. What makes this vessel unique is the yellow splatter glaze on its main body - most likely an accident during the firing process - that gives the jug its unique character and charm. The ceramic pitcher represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. It features that magic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can bring about authentically. Today, the rustic jug can be utilised as a small vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some Mediterranean charm to any space.
