A charming antique yeast pot with lid hailing from the southern Italian region of Puglia. Dating back to the mid 1800s, this hand thrown pot was originally used for storing the family’s all-important mother yeast. The green and brown splatter effect on the surface comes from the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped additional colours on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees as a brush. This unique technique means each piece is one-of-a-kind, with the wonderful colour combination of splashes of maroon brown over pistachio green spots, set against a buttermilk-hue base. The rustic pot with small side handles also comes with its original lid (please note the sympathetic repair in the lid). The terracotta pot has that well-loved patina that is testament to its daily use and the passing of time. Today it’s the ideal piece to inject some colour and farmhouse charm to any home or space, especially when pared with the matching pottery from southern Italy as seen in the images.
