An antique handmade plate with a gently scalloped edge and soft buttermilk-hue glaze, that is typical of Pugliese pottery. Dating back to the late 1800s, the simple yet elegant design is common to Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft. Traditionally this large plate would have been in daily use at meal times, most likely as a serving platter due to its size. The ivory pottery from the southern Italian region known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. This large plate with its glossy glaze was considered very valuable and precious to the family - well looked after and in use up until the mid 1900s. Today, the hand thrown platter would make a lovely addition to a kitchen bench or table setting, adding some country charm, especially when pared with the matching plates and jug as seen in the images.
Found in Martina Franca
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known for its baroque architecture.
Dimensions: H6cm x W35cm x D35cm
