This antique confit pot dates back to the mid-1800s and is a particularly rare find. The large hand crafted pot with handles was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil. What sets this vessel apart from other confit pots of the southern Italian region of Calabria is the minimal and spontaneous motif in pistachio green hand painted on both sides (usually it is depicted on one side), as well as the thumb indent detailing across the top edge. These details would have made it an expensive piece at the time and most likely belonged to a wealthy or noble family. The abstract tree of life motif traditionally found on farmhouse vessels, signifies good fortune and longevity, and was designed with the hopes of a bountiful harvest bringing prosperity to the rural folk at the time. The large pot features that magically rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today, this rustic vessel is the perfect piece to add some Mediterranean charm to any space, especially when pared with the matching pottery from southern Italy as seen in the images.
