Antique Yellow Half Glaze Amphora

€210.00

An antique amphora with a unique and vivacious yellow glaze, two handles and an elegant form. This amphora or ‘cicene’ as it is called in local dialect, was made in the early 1900s and originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia. It was originally used for wine, the thick clay keeping the contents cool during those long, hot summer days. The yellow glaze at the top was added for hygiene purposes so it could be wiped clean after use, rather than simply decorative (as it was expensive to glaze the entire vessel). The hand thrown amphora features that magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use. Today, the antique vessel would be ideal as decorative display piece adding some colour to any space, indoors or out. Create an impactful display with the other yellow-hued ceramics as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H33cm x W24cm x D24cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
