An antique confit pot with a unique and vivacious yellow glaze, two handles and an elegant form. This vasetto or ‘cammauttu’ as it is called in local dialect, was made in the early 1900s and originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia. It was originally used for preserving foods - commonly olives in olive oil or brine, or black olives in a sweet water which were used on focaccia. A linen or hemp cloth would have been tied around the opening with a rope to protect its contents from insects. The charming antique pot has a distinctive yellow half glaze that gives way to the raw clay at the bottom. This type of domestic pottery was typically only partially glazed - at the rim or top for hygiene purposes, as it was expensive to glaze the entire vessel. The hand thrown pot features that magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use.
