This extra-large hand painted ceramic plate is rare example of Pugliese domestic pottery. Dating back to the late 1800s, the ‘righe & stelle’ motif is particular to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia renowned for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the mid 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. This hand thrown plate is particularly unique as the artist has interpreted the more traditional rosette or star design creating a striking floral or sun-like pattern. The antique plate would have been in use up until the mid 1900s, and specifically to serve a family during meal times. It features the traditional colour combination of sea blue flower and maroon brown stripe, set against the soft buttermilk-hue glaze. The well loved piece shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The charmingly rustic plate would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, hung as wall art or a great centrepiece on a table for fruit and vegetables. Create an impactful display with the hand painted farmhouse-style pottery from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
