Large Antique Blue Tree of Life Pot

€210.00
Sold

This antique confit pot has a minimal and spirited hand painted motif adorning the front. Made in the early 1900s, the hand thrown ceramic piece originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. The abstract tree of life decoration signifies good fortune and longevity to the largely rural folk of the time, with hopes of a bountiful harvest. Originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil, it was often topped with a handmade wooden lid to keep insects out. What sets this confit pot apart (besides its large size) is the ink blue colour of the tree of life design as traditionally they were hand painted in green or mustard yellow. It has an all-over pearlescent glaze, with that magical patina that only the passing of time and daily use can authentically bring about. Today this large example would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or as a decorative display piece to add farmhouse charm to any home or space. Add impact with the matching tree of life pot as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H29cm x W22cm x D20cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
