Large Antique Crinkle Edge Farmhouse Bowl
A charming antique bowl typical of Pugliese ceramics that dates back to the mid 1800s. Found as part of an estate of a noble family’s palazzo in Ostuni, the butter-milk glazed vessel features the crinkle cut edge that is symbolic of the Puglia region. This design is particular to Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia renowned for its age-old ceramic craft and tradition. The ivory pottery known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, usually produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. The well loved piece shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina, and was used for domestic use up until the mid 1900s. The large rustic bowl would make a lovely addition to the kitchen or table setting, adding some country charm, especially when teamed with the matching ceramic bowls as seen in the images.
