Large Antique Hand Painted Bowl
An antique hand painted bowl with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from the southern Italian region of Calabria. This large historic example dates back to the late 1800s and features a decorative sponge-effect design in verdant green around the outer edge framed by circular lines in cerulean blue. Often this decorative element, commonly seen on local pottery, was created using potato skins ‘as paint brushes’, dabbed onto the outer edges of the stoneware.
