Large Antique Scallop Edge Plate
An antique handmade plate with a gently scalloped edge and soft buttermilk-hue glaze, that is typical of Pugliese pottery. Dating back to the late 1800s, the simple yet elegant design is common to Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft. Traditionally this extra large plate would have been in daily use at meal times, most likely as a serving platter due to its size. The ivory pottery from the southern Italian region known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. This large plate with its glossy glaze was considered very valuable and precious to the family - well looked after and in use up until the mid 1900s. Today, the hand thrown platter would make a lovely addition to a kitchen bench or table setting, adding some country charm, especially when pared with the matching plates and jug as seen in the images.
