Large Antique Amphora with Yellow Drip
This striking hand thrown amphora originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia and is called a ‘trimmone’. The large antique amphora dates back to the mid-1800s and would have been used to store liquids - most likely wine or olive oil, with a wood stopper wrapped in a piece of cloth to seal its contents. The luminous ivory-coloured glaze on this amphora was common to local domestic pottery, especially with ceramics storing food, olive oil or wine. Called ‘robba bianca’ it represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, and is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. Specific to the Grottaglie tradition of ceramics, this historical piece has a lot of character, with its unique hand crafted form and magical patina. What makes this amphora extra special is the mustard yellow 'drip' on one side - most likely caused in the kiln during the firing process. The antique amphora has seen over 150 years of service to its family, and naturally shows some charming signs of age. This historic example would make the perfect decorative centrepiece adding some farmhouse charm to any home or space.
