This unique confit pot originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria and dates back to the mid 1800s. It was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil. What makes this antique confit pot a rare find is the minimal and spontaneous tree of life motif in ink blue adorning the front - usually they were designed in a green hue. The abstract tree of life motif depicted on these farmhouse vessels were commonly hand painted by an artist who would paint the pots in batches. The tree of life signified good fortune and longevity, with the hopes of a bountiful harvest that would bring prosperity to the rural folk at the time. The large hand crafted vasetto features that magically rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. Today, this charming piece would make an ideal vase for fresh or dried flowers or simply as a decorative display piece.
