Large Antique Créme Glazed Jug
This large hand-thrown antique jug dates back to the late 1800s and was originally used to hold water or wine at family meal times. With its simple yet elegant design, traditional pinched spout and glossy buttermilk glaze, it is unique to Grottaglie - a town in southern Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft and tradition. The ivory ceramics from the southern Italian region, known as ‘robba bianca’, represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. This historical example of domestic pottery is quite a rare find, as pitchers in this size and with such a perfect cream glaze are hard to come by. Today the large jug can be used as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece, adding some rustic country charm, especially when pared with the matching tableware as seen in the images.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).
Dimensions: H28cm x W18cm x D14cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
