Large Antique Hand-Painted Bowl with Old Metal Repair – Castelli, Abruzzo

€260.00

A striking late-19th-century antique Italian ceramic bowl from Castelli, Abruzzo, one of Italy's historic centres of artistic pottery. Hand thrown and hand painted, this exceptionally large bowl features a distinctive royal-blue stencil border and delicate circular motifs across the centre, set against a warm creamy-white glaze.

The combination of bold blue decoration and simple geometric forms gives the bowl an unexpectedly modern quality, despite its age. Its beautifully crackled surface reveals the authentic patina developed through generations of everyday use.

One of the most distinctive features is the original metal staple repair visible on the reverse. Before modern adhesives were widely available, damaged pottery was traditionally repaired using metal staples or clamps. Valuable household ceramics were often repaired rather than discarded, allowing them to remain in use for generations. The repair is therefore an important part of this bowl's history and character.

Originally used in the family home for serving food at mealtimes, this substantial 35 cm bowl is now a wonderful decorative piece. Display it on a kitchen island, console or dining table as a centrepiece for fruit and vegetables, bringing the understated character of Italian farmhouse pottery into a contemporary interior.

Found in Lecce, the Baroque capital of Salento, this one-of-a-kind bowl is a beautiful example of the diverse antique ceramics discovered by Rivesto throughout Italy.
