Large Antique Hand Painted 'Evil Eye' Plate

This antique ceramic plate from the late 1800s is a rare example of Pugliese domestic pottery. It originates from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia renowned for its age-old ceramic craft. The hand painted pattern is particularly unique as it differs from the traditional rosette or star formation known as ‘righe & stelle’ more commonly found on tableware from the region. The design features circular decorations resembling the evil eye motif - added by the artist to ward off the ‘malocchio’ (a malevolent glare), a deeply rooted, ancient superstition in southern Italy, particularly in Puglia, Campania, and Calabria. The large rustic plate would have been in use up until the mid 1900s, and specifically to serve a family during meal times. It features the traditional colour combination of cobalt blue flower and maroon brown stripe, set against the buttermilk-hue glaze. The well loved plate shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The charming piece would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, hung as wall art or a great centrepiece on a table for fruit and vegetables. Create an impactful display with the matching farmhouse-style ceramics from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
