Large Antique Hand Painted Sea Jug

€280.00

A rare hand-thrown jug from Puglia that dates back to the mid 1800s. What sets this jug apart from other pitchers of the region is the unique hand painted design in deep blue, symbolic of the two seas that border the ‘heel’ of southern Italy (the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas). The large antique jug originates from Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, and would have been primarily used for wine during family meal times. This charming piece with its sea blue wave and linear stripes, features the pinched spout typical of southern Italian jugs, and an aged patina brought about authentically through daily use and the passing of time. Today, this large pitcher would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or space. Create an impactful display with the Pugliese farmhouse jug and plates as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H28.5cm x W18cm x D16cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
