Large Antique Hand Painted Stripe Pot

€250.00

This large antique cylindrical shaped pot with hand painted stripes is called a capasa in local Pugliese dialect and dates back to the late 1800s. The hand thrown vessel originates from the small Salento town of San Pietro in Lama - once a renowned centre of pottery production. This striking piece is a very rare find and was found as part of a noble family’s home in the southern Pugliese town. Originally used as a confit pot to preserve food like olives in brine, the antique vessel is internally glazed with hand painted wide soft blue and thin ochre brown stripes banding the outer surface. The indents on the upper edge were utilised tying a linen cloth with a rope to protect the precious contents. The antique pot has an organic patina which has eroded beautifully over time with use, making it ever more charming. Today this farmhouse-style pot makes a lovely decorative display piece, or could be used as a vase for fresh or dried flowers.

Found in San Pietro in Lama

the small town in the Salento known for its ceramic tradition.

Dimensions: H32.5cm x W25cm x D25cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen. To utilise as vases, it is recommended to use a separate internal water vase or vials for live stems.
