This large hand painted bowl featuring a unique design originates from Grottaglie, a renowned centre of ceramic production in Puglia dating back to the Magna Graecia period (8th century). This hand-thrown bowl in particular dates back to the late 1700s and was most likely used to serve a family at mealtimes. It features a beautifully hand painted sun and nature motif in sunflower yellow and turquoise green, as well as circular designs in soft blue possibly representing the eye motif that was traditionally added to ward off the ‘malocchio’ (a malevolent glare). Set against the soft ivory glaze, it is unglazed externally where the clay is left raw. The charming farmhouse-style piece has a magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The one-of-a -kind bowl is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, and ideal to use as a fruit and vegetable bowl. Add impact with the rustic plates and bowls from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
