Antique Hand Painted Tree of Life Confit Pot

Sold

This antique confit pot has a truly magical, minimal and spirited hand painted motif adorning the front. This large confit pot dating back to the mid 1800s features the tree of life that is typical of pottery from the southern Italian region of Calabria. They were hand painted to bring good fortune and longevity to the largely rural folk of the time. Originally used for preserving the family’s most prized foods such as anchovies, sardines, artichokes, figs or olives in olive oil, often with a handmade wooden lid to keep out insects. The abstract tree of life design has been rendered in mustard yellow and pastel green, and set against a buttermilk glaze, that reveals its earthy clay base at the bottom. Today, the large handmade vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or as a decorative display piece to add farmhouse charm to any home or space - especially when teamed with the matching vases as seen in the images.

Found in Squillace

a hilltop town in Calabria known for its ancient ceramic craft.

Dimensions: H30cm x W24cm x D22cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
