Large Antique Rustic Green Plant Pot
A rare find from the southern Italian region of Calabria. This large plant pot dates back to the late 1700s and would have adorned the entrance of a noble family’s palazzo. The beautifully formed vessel features a magical patina with an eroded green glaze that gives this piece its mesmerising allure. It has a distinctive hand crafted roped edge around the opening, matching stylised roped handles, as well as 3D reliefs of floral displays on both sides. These decorative elements also resemble the traditional southern Italian ‘mascherone’ - or mask motif usually added to ward off the evil eye. The charming ceramic plant pot with its raised pedestal is unglazed internally and features a hole at the bottom of the vessel for drainage. It has that well aged patina that can only be brought about authentically from years of daily use, the passing of time and exposure to the elements. This truly impressive plant pot is the perfect statement piece to add some of that rustic Mediterranean charm to any space, indoors or out.
Found in Grottaglie
a town in southern Puglia renowned for its ceramic craft since the Middle Ages.
Dimensions: H45cm x W34cm x D30cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
