A rare late-18th-century antique Puglian ceramic jug from Grottaglie, one of Southern Italy's historic centres of ceramic production. Hand thrown and traditionally made for domestic use, this large rustic pitcher was originally used for holding wine at family mealtimes.
What makes this jug particularly distinctive is its beautifully sculptural rippled surface, which gently spirals around the body of the vessel and reveals the skill of the original potter. The traditional pinched spout completes its simple yet highly characterful form.
The jug is an example of robba bianca, one of the finest forms of traditional Puglian domestic pottery. Made with a white pewter glaze and fired twice, robba bianca was prized for its refined finish while retaining the robust character of handmade rural ceramics.
Its soft ivory glaze has developed an authentic patina through generations of everyday use and the passage of time. Today, this one-of-a-kind antique jug makes a beautiful decorative object or statement vase, bringing the warmth and understated character of historic Puglian farmhouse pottery to a contemporary interior.
Found in Grottaglie, in Southern Puglia, this exceptional piece is a wonderful example of the region's centuries-old ceramic tradition. Pair it with other antique robba bianca and farmhouse ceramics for a collected Mediterranean interior.
