This hand-thrown antique jug dates back to the late 1700s from the southern Italian region of Puglia. Used for holding wine at meal times it features the pinched spout typical of ceramic pitchers from southern Italy. What makes this vessel a rare find is the ‘rippled’ effect that gently spirals around the main body, highlighting the skill of the potter. The unique jug represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic pottery, known as ‘robba bianca’ which is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. It features that magic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can bring about authentically. Today, the large rustic jug can be utilised as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some Mediterranean charm to any space.
