A large antique confit pot with a rustic unglazed patina and two handles. This vasetto or ‘cammauttu’ as it is called in local dialect, was made in the late 1800s and originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia. It was originally used for preserving foods - commonly olives in olive oil or brine, or black olives in a sweet water which were used on focaccia. A linen or hemp cloth would have been tied around the opening with a rope to protect its contents from insects. The charming antique pot features an ochre hued glaze around the opening of the vessel and remains unglazed around the body. This type of domestic pottery was typically only partially glazed at the rim or top for hygiene purposes, as it was expensive to glaze the entire vessel. Its raw surface highlights the magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use. Today, the antique vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers. Create an impactful display with the other farmhouse ceramics from southern Italy, as seen in the images.
