Large Rustic Scalloped Edge Plate

€140.00
Sold

A large antique handmade plate with a scalloped edge that is typical of Pugliese pottery. Dating back to the late 1800s, the simple yet elegant design is particular to Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft. The ivory pottery known as ‘robba bianca’ represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired, and is the most expensive of this rural ceramic. The old pottery from Puglia, like this plate has a rustic handmade, farmhouse feel, and traditionally would have been in daily use at family meal times. The antique plate shows signs of its years of use and has developed a wonderful patina over time. It also has 2 holes at the center, perhaps used to display in its later incarnation as a decorative display piece. Today it would make a lovely addition to the kitchen or table setting, especially when pared with the matching plate as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H7cm x W34cm x D34cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen
