This hand painted plate with its unique design is a very rare find. The large antique hand-thrown plate hails from Calvello, a renowned centre of ceramic production in Basilicata dating back to the early 13th century. This large platter in particular dates back to the late 1700s and is a typical round plate with a raised edge that was traditionally used to dry vegetables like tomatoes in the sun, but also to serve a family at mealtimes. It features a beautifully hand painted floral design at centre stage and on its rim, in a soft blue with leaves in a mustard yellow, and sponge-work in the same blue (perhaps representing the sea) framing the border of the plate. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The one-of-a -kind plate is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, or can be hung as wall art.
