An antique hand-thrown jug with the hand painted floral motif that is symbolic of the Puglia region. The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. This rustic pitcher in particular dates back to the late-1800s and would have been primarily used for wine during family meal times. The charming piece with its well-loved patina and pinched spout features the floral motif across the body in inky blue set against a rich buttermilk glaze.
