Antique Marbled Confit Pot With Lid

€190.00

Antique hand thrown confit pot with its original intact lid and an iridescent maroon glaze. Dating back to the early 1900s this kind of pottery is called a ‘vasettu smarmriatu cu lu cuperchiu’ in local dialect. The old technique of a marbled glaze is common to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia renowned for its age old ceramic craft. Crafted by hand, the unique glaze means no two pots are the same. Originally the antique jar was used for preserving foods in olive oil, such as artichokes, eggplants, peppers or salted anchovies. It features that magical patina that only daily use and the passing of time can bring about authentically. Today, this farmhouse-style piece would be ideal for storage, used as a vase for fresh flowers, or simply decorative. Create an impactful display with the matching pottery from southern Italy as seen in the images.
