An antique hand painted plate with a design characteristic of tableware from Sicily. This hand thrown plate hails from Caltagirone, a renowned centre of ceramic production on the island since the Magna Graecia period (from the 8th century BC). This rustic plate in particular dates back to the early 1800s and is called a ‘Fangotto’ - a typical round plate with a raised edge that was traditionally used to dry tomatoes in the sun or as the only dish shared between husband and wife during family meal times. The fangotti plates were hand painted by an artist who would design different motifs at the centre of the plate depicting scenes of nature, human-made constructs such as houses or boats, or animals such as the swan in water as seen on this charming plate. The focal point would usually be hand painted in a cobalt blue, and would be framed by a wave pattern or sponge effect in green, bordering the plate, most likely representing the sea. The farmhouse-style piece has a rustic patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The antique plate is the perfect piece to inject some Mediterranean charm to any kitchen or table setting, and it would make an ideal addition as wall art, especially when pared with the matching fangotti plates as seen in the images.
