A rare early-19th-century antique Sicilian ceramic Fangotto plate from Caltagirone, one of Sicily's historic centres of ceramic production. Hand thrown and hand painted, this distinctive rustic plate features a beautiful Tree of Life motif in cobalt blue, framed by a green wave-like border.
The Fangotto is a traditional round Sicilian plate with a raised edge, historically used for drying tomatoes in the sun and, in the home, as a shared serving dish during family meals. Each plate was individually decorated by hand, with central motifs ranging from animals and boats to houses, landscapes and scenes from nature.
The Tree of Life decoration gives this particular piece a wonderfully symbolic and decorative quality. The cobalt-blue central motif is surrounded by a green sponge-painted border, traditionally associated with the colours of the Mediterranean sea.
Beautifully aged through generations of use, the plate has developed an authentic rustic patina that gives it its individual character. Today, it makes an exceptional decorative piece for a Mediterranean, farmhouse or collected interior, displayed on a wall, shelf or table. Pair it with the matching Fangotti shown in the photographs for a striking Sicilian collection.
Found in Lecce, the Baroque capital of Salento, this one-of-a-kind plate brings the character of historic Sicilian pottery into a contemporary home.
