Antique Hand Painted Pharmacy Jar

€240.00

A charmingly rustic, hand painted pharmacy jar from the southern Italian region of Calabria. It was historically used for storing and preserving herbs, ointments, powders and liquids, in a characteristic design that is common to Calabrese pottery. Dating back to the late 1700s, this antique ceramic vase is decorated with splashes of vivid hand painted brush strokes - in pistachio green and mustard yellow - and framed by thin earthy ochre lines, set against a cream glaze base. The wonderful patina is consistent with age and use giving this distinctive vessel its immense character. This hand thrown piece could be utilised as a vase for fresh flowers or simply decorative, adding some farmhouse charm to any space.

Found in Tropea

the Calabrese seaside town known as the pearl of the Tyrrhenian.
